DESCRIPTION
Within the framework of initiatives dedicated to the digital transition and cultural valorization, the project “TAZEBAO: Open Source Environment for the Digital Valorization of Museum Collections on Display, in Storage and in Archives” represents a strategic pillar co-funded by the European Union through NextGenerationEU funds. This initiative is integrated into the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), specifically under Mission 4 (“Education and Research”), Component 2 (“From Research to Business”), Investment 1.3, pertaining to the Extended Partnership 5 “CHANGES” (Cultural Heritage Active Innovation for Sustainable Society).
The project aims to overcome physical and cognitive barriers within cultural sites by designing and developing an open, flexible, and inclusive technological framework. This framework is designed for the phygital exploitation of museum heritage, whether exhibited on display, conserved in storage, or preserved within archives.
To translate this vision into actionable solutions, TAZEBAO spearheaded the implementation of a digital framework based on open-source technologies, which encompasses:
-
3D Cataloging and Visualization Platform: Systems engineered for the ultra-high-resolution digitization of artifacts. These platforms enable researchers and visitors to explore details invisible to the naked eye, with a targeted focus on valorizing objects that are normally inaccessible to the public due to being held in storage facilities.
-
Interfaces and Applications for Expanded Accessibility: Interactive web and mobile environments designed to personalize the visitor and study experience. These integrate hybrid and inclusive modalities of engagement to actively involve diverse communities and public segments with specific accessibility needs.
-
Integrated Archival Data Management Systems: Software infrastructures capable of establishing a seamless interoperability between on-display collections and their related archival documentation. This provides a model for scientific dissemination and storytelling that is replicable across different museum contexts.
Furthermore, the project developed three digital exhibition prototypes utilizing various publishing and interaction modalities. These prototypes were structured around the materials and requirements expressed by the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography and the “Cesare Lombroso” Museum of Criminal Anthropology, both part of the University Museum System (SMA) of the University of Turin: DIGITAL CEMí, TATTOO, and ART BRUT.
